Music Spotlight: Slow Pulp

By Ashly Hospodka

In a time where it is easy to get discouraged about the future of music, Slow Pulp, and SPECIFICALLY Slow Pulp make me hopeful about the future of music.

In October 2023, me and Carley went to see them live in concert at The Masquerade in Atlanta. But, on May 3rd, 2023, when this post was first written as a note in my phone, I had already fallen in love with the band.

I’ve never heard another band that has their sound. They stand out among other indie rockers currently because of their interestingly layered chords, lead singer, Emily Massey’s, angelic and haunting vocals, and lyrics that fit perfectly in the context of the music. Their music feels experimental but at the same time the band sounds so sure of themselves. Slow Pulp knows exactly how to change up the music and tempo seamlessly.

Their song “Falling Apart” took me by surprise the second I heard it play over my headphones while I was sitting in a Starbucks doing school work. I was listening to a random indie playlist on Spotify, focused more on my work than the music that was playing, and I heard it. It made me stop in my tracks and ask “WHO IS THIS” and “WHY HAVEN’T I HEARD THEM BEFORE?” They’re just one of those bands that makes you stop and remember exactly what you were doing when you heard them for the first time.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard music as cool as Slow Pulp’s before. They make me excited, inspire me, and stir up my own creativity. Their sound is what I’d describe as my ideal taste in music that I didn’t even know was there until I heard them. Their songs have an element that is eccentric and unconventional while perfectly fitting into the overall sound. You can tell every member of the band is ridiculously talented as well as creative and they obviously have an insane producer.

Their most recent world tour from 2023 saw incredible success, with most venues selling out, having low tickets, and even adding extra nights. Coming up, it looks like Slow Pulp will be opening for Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service. When I wrote this back in May 2023, I knew they had to potential to become huge and influential and it seems like they’re now well on their way. I wish them nothing but luck in the future and cannot wait to see how far they go in their music career.

Here’s a link so you can check out their music for yourself! I promise you won’t be disappointed.
